French-Prussian war 1870-71 from the artwork of Louis Charles Bombled (1862-1927). Painter, watercolorist, draughtsman, illustrator especially of Military subjects. Louis Charles Bombled was born in Chantilly in 1862. His father is the the Dutch painter Karel Frederik Bombled. Young pupil of French artist Luminir he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he received an honourable mention in 1885, and a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. He was a very popular illustrator and seemed to empathise with the books he worked on. He illustrated many works for several books publishing. Among these are several by James Fenimore Cooper, including The Deerslayer, The Pioneers, Las Cases : Memorial of St-Helena, Jules Moinaux (father of Courteline) : Superintendant’s Office, Michelet : History of France, several by Walter Scott, including Ivanhoe, Quentin Durward. He also produced illustrations for contemporary publications, including “La Caricature”, “Le Chat Noir”, “L’Illustration”, etc. His paint are very researched, especially the subjets related the knight. In a recent auction one of his sheet was been sold for 6.000 euro. He died in 1927 at Pierrefonds.
