Being born in a workhouse is surely not the best thingin the world but coming into the world was somethingfor Oliver Twist. An old nurse and a parish surgeonwere there to witness the birth of the child. After a fewstruggle Oliver breathed and sneezed, giving the firstproof of the free action of his lungs. The young woman'sface was extremely pale who could barely raise her headfrom the pillow.
